Lessons I Learned From My First Year in Arlington

I’ve wanted to live in Arlington since sophomore year of college. I thought I had it all figured out: the location, the job, the roommates, the plan. One year ago, I finally moved to Ballston full of hope and excitement, but life doesn't always go to plan.

I landed what I thought would be my dream job. Spoiler alert: it was an absolute nightmare. So much so that I switched jobs after just one week (Yes, I know...a week). I ended up going back to another offer in a field I hadn’t originally imagined myself pursuing. And now? I’m living the dream every day with an amazing team that inspires and challenges me. That experience taught me more about resilience, self-trust, and embracing uncertainty than any guidebook ever could.

1. Embrace the Unknown

Even when you’ve been dreaming about something for years, reality rarely matches expectations. Taking risks—like leaving a “dream job” after a week—can lead you to opportunities you never imagined.

2. You Are Who You Surround Yourself With

The people around you shape your experience. Friends, roommates, and colleagues turned Arlington from a place on a map into home. I learned that choosing who you spend your time with makes all the difference.

3. Celebrate Small Wins

From navigating the city on my own to excelling in my new role, small victories reminded me I was moving in the right direction—even when it didn’t feel like it.

4. Life Moves Fast—Stay Present

One week I was dreading work; the next, I was thriving in a role I never expected to love. Arlington taught me to savor the moment and appreciate progress along the way.

5. Growth Often Comes From Challenge

Leaving a job after a week wasn’t easy—it was humbling, scary, and freeing. Growth comes from stepping into discomfort, making tough choices, and trusting that the right opportunities are ahead.

Looking back, my first year in Arlington was full of lessons, opportunities, and growth. It taught me to embrace the unexpected, learn from every challenge, and find your dream in ways you never imagined—even if it doesn’t come in the package you expected.
